A paraplegic for 47 years has returned to sensation in the legs and feet and leg movement after being subjected to experimental treatment based on stem cells, in Bahia.
Developed by scientists from the Centre of Biotechnology and Cell Therapy San Rafael Hospital in Salvador, and Fiocruz, treatment consists of removing adult stem cells from the pelvic bone and re-implantation into the lesion site.
The first patient, a military policeman whose identity was preserved Salvador, paralyzed nine years ago after a fall that traumatized the lumbar region.
Six weeks after implantation of adult stem cells at the injury site, the patient has returned to feel my legs and feet.
He began physical therapy to strengthen muscles that were much atrophied after the long period of inactivity.
Biologist Milena Soares, who participated in the project, is cautious in predicting if the patient walk again one day.
She said this will depend, above all, of physiotherapy. "He can make some moves with the leg, and the results are already showing very significant advances for the patient's quality of life," he says.
The researchers said there was an increase in the control of bladder and sphincter. With this, the patient will be free of catheterizations daily and made to withdraw urine.
"There was a very good response in the postoperative period. Four days after [the surgery], the patient has shown improvement," says Marcus Vinicius Mendonca, neurosurgeon who joins the group.
this experimental phase, which aims to certify the safety of the procedure the technique will be applied to 20 volunteers. Two of them received the cells before yesterday and yesterday. The next procedure will do next week. According
Mendonca, postoperative characteristics observed in the first patient, the absence of neuropathic pain (characteristic of neurological injuries), were repeated in two other patients.
